In Scientific American article, "Rising Sea Levels More Dangerous Than Thought," written by Tia Ghose and LIVESCIENCE the author explains the current dilemma with climate change and it's effects with the different rising sea levels. Due to climate change, the bodies of water on Earth are expanding and increasing in temperature. As lead scientist, Steve Nerem, from NASA Sea Level Change Team stated "when heat goes under the ocean, it expands just like mercury in a thermometer." This meaning that water is increasing in amount. Yet like the law of conservation of mass says: no matter can be created nor destroyed. So where in the world is all this increasing amount of water coming from? Studies show that with the increasing amount of heat entering the earth, aka climate change, more and more ice is being melted and this increases the amount of water. From solid to liquid is the change of water, just changing phases. Because of the melting ice, the sea is rising at a faster pace. The global sea level has increased about 0.07 inches every year. If global warming continues at this rate, within the next century, the water will rise to 21 feet. Some of the melting can be irreversible, but it could take many years to reverse.
We should not take these news lightly, especially those living near the coast. In Florida the soil is very permeable which could lead to more "seawater intrusion". This is important news because it provides the effects of global warming caused by human activities. This should be used as a resource for those that don't know causes of global warming.
